Another new addition to Walkfest

It's great to have new groups wanting to get involved with Walkfest. Our walk on Saturday 21st September - A Walk on the Wild Side - is a good example of organisations working together to come up with a really interesting walk. This blog gives the three contributors a chance to introduce themselves.

The Walk: - A Walk on the Wild side

This walk will bring you an insight from 2 countryside rangers into how wildflower meadows are cared for and their importance for recreation and wildlife. You will get to discover who are the people working behind the scenes to ensure our countryside is protected and learn more about nature throughout the day. The walk will also introduce you to the Surrey Young Walkers, a fantastic and friendly group who lead regular walks across Surrey and the Land Trust who manage several greenspaces across Surrey, Hampshire and beyond.

Who is involved in the walk:

Surrey Young Walkers are a friendly walking and hiking group aimed at people in their 20’s-40’s in and around Surrey. A range of walks are delivered from 6 miles gentle rambles to 20 mile strenuous hikes plus night walks and weekends away across the UK and abroad. They are keen to meet new members and offer 3 free walks after which you can join their parent organisation - the Ramblers association for an annual subscription.

Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership (BVCP) work on behalf of the relevant land owners and local authorities to manage the Blackwater Valley. This is located on the borders of Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire. The Valley provides an important green corridor for local residents, with conservation work carried out by a dedicated team of rangers and a large number of volunteers.

The Land Trust are a national greenspace charity who are committed to the long term sustainable management of land for community benefit. Our vision is to improve the quality of people’s lives through thriving wild spaces. The Land Trust took on the management of Ash Green Meadows in 2018. We work with local organisations such as Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership to manage sites. In Surrey we have a growing number of greenspaces including Weyburn Meadows, Eashing Fields, Little Heath, Oldland’s Copse and Horsley Meadows.
