Do you know about Go50?

We are pleased that Go50 has joined us for this year's Guildford Walkfest. A number of our readers may not have come across this group so we have invited them to contribute this blog and tell you more about their activities.

GO50 is a programme of walks for the over 50s, organised by local charity Age UK Surrey.

All are most welcome to come on our historic Lovelace Bridges walk which is both fascinating and good exercise. Those who come along may also have the opportunity to join our ongoing Go50 Walks programme around our beautiful county.  Walkers stay with us for many years enjoying the outdoors, making lasting friendships whilst maintaining or increasing their fitness levels. The Lovelace Bridges walk, offered as part of the Guildford Walking Festival, is typical of a morning walk in the Go50 programme, taken at a leisurely pace with water stops/ banana breaks etc. We look forward to seeing you – please join us!

Our longer walks, where the advice is to bring a picnic, would aim to get back by 2.30, covering say 7 miles. Most parts of rural Surrey are covered, not just the Box Hill, Leith Hill, Frensham Ponds tourist favourites, often including places participants may not yet have discovered.

Walking with others, socialising as you exercise, adds significantly to beneficial health effects. There will always be an experienced volunteer to meet you at the start and lead the way; there is no need to book, just turn up! New walkers will be given a Registration form to complete at leisure, and return by e-mail.

The lengths of the walks range from about 3½ to 8 miles; the distance of each is indicated on the programme. If you are in any doubt about your fitness, we do suggest that you try a shorter walk first.

A voluntary donation of £3 per walk is suggested and would be very welcome; donations go directly towards maintaining the GO50 walks programme.

You are asked to

·        arrive 15 minutes early to register your participation

·        wear walking boots or other suitable footwear, and bring a drink and a snack.

·        not to bring children or dogs

·        carry personal identification and emergency contact details in case of accident or emergency.
