So What's in a Name?

There are a limited number of descriptive words to use when naming walking groups so that it is inevitable that some will have similar names. For example, we have the Guildford Rambling Club and Guildford Ramblers – both of whom are contributors to Guildford Walkfest. In this blog, we have given Guildford Rambling Club a chance to introduce themselves to you.

The Guildford Rambling Club was formed in 1973 as an offshoot of an older, London-based club. The Club’s overall purpose is simply to enjoy walking in the varied and beautiful countryside around Guildford. In addition we sometimes arrange holidays away. We are a small, friendly group and we generally walk on Sundays with walks of varying lengths to suit all tastes. Walking at steady but slow pace will allow you to feel close to nature and understand the county you live in. We prefer to bring our own picnic but if our walks bring us to a pub at lunchtime there is time to try the local ale. We very much welcome new members.
Many artists i.e. poets, writers, years ago, enjoyed the Surrey Hills - an area with more woodland than any other county in England with hills, valleys, heathlands, waterways and beautiful villages. So we have a wide range of places to visit on our walks. We always try to avoid swampy grounds in winter but will try to catch the blackberry or sloe harvest early autumn.
The Wey Navigation around Guildford, Godalming and Ripley is never dull and the towpaths will lead you to numerous locks, birdlife, boats and mills. In contrast, Pewley Downs and The Chantries near Guildford offers splendid views and carpets of bluebells in season - and when you are at Newlands Corner do not forget to view the ancient yew trees. Elsewhere, Sheepleas near West Horsley Place, has chalk soil and rich flora in abundance.
Newlands Corner (North Downs) and Silent Pool will test your calf muscles but all is worth it when you stop in the village of Shere for a rest. Many treats are available there - and do not forget to see the ducks on the Tillingbourne.
So with such a range of places to walk and with our friendly group on hand to help you enjoy them, why not join us on one of our upcoming walks. Check out our events on 21st and 28th September.
